Care Guide for Wool Blankets

Washing Wool Blankets

Wool is a natural fiber that naturally resists dirt, which means it does not require frequent washing. Many stains can be removed by gently brushing off excess dirt with a soft brush or rinsing the spot with cold water and then drying the item in fresh air. With proper care and minimal washing, a natural wool blanket can maintain its quality for many years.

However, it’s important to remember that wool does not tolerate aggressive mechanical cleaning. If you decide to wash your blanket in a washing machine, extra care is required.

Can You Wash a Wool Blanket?

Before washing, always check the care label. Some blankets may be marked as dry clean only, meaning they should not be washed at home. If no such restriction is indicated, you can carefully wash your wool blanket yourself.

What You May Need

  • Liquid detergent for wool or delicate fabrics
  • Salt
  • Baking soda
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Lint remover or fabric brush

Step-by-Step Care

Step 1

Inspect the blanket for holes, loose threads, or damage. Repair any issues before washing, as water and movement can make them worse.

Step 2

Pilling is common with wool, so gently brush or use a lint remover before cleaning. Always work in the same direction to keep the texture even.

Step 3 – Light Cleaning

For minor dirt, use dry cleaning methods. Apply a wool-safe cleaner as foam, let it dry, then remove residue with a vacuum or by shaking the blanket.

You can also use a natural method: mix salt and baking soda in equal parts, apply to the stained area, leave for about an hour, then shake thoroughly.

Deep Cleaning

For heavier stains, spot cleaning or washing may be necessary. Apply diluted detergent to the stain and gently rub without pressure. Rinse with cold water until clean. Repeat if needed.

Important: Never twist or wring the blanket.

Machine Washing

Yes, wool blankets can be washed in a machine if allowed by the manufacturer.

  • Use soaking mode for 15–30 minutes
  • Water temperature: 30°C (86°F)
  • Choose “Wool” or “Delicate” cycle
  • Use a mild detergent
  • Do not use spin cycle

After washing, gently press out excess water without twisting. Wrap the blanket in towels to absorb moisture.

Drying After Washing

Proper drying is just as important as washing:

  1. Lay the blanket flat on dry towels
  2. Roll it with the towels to remove excess water, then unroll
  3. Hang to dry in a well-ventilated area

You may hang it indoors or outdoors, but avoid direct sunlight, as it can fade colors and damage fibers.

Do not use a dryer, as it may shrink and damage the blanket.

Once fully dry, gently smooth the surface by hand or use a soft brush.

Storage

When not in use, store your wool blanket in a clean, dry, and dark place. You may place it in a sealed plastic bag or container to protect it from pests.

With proper care, your wool blanket will remain soft, fresh, and ready to keep you warm and comfortable for years to come.
